Total income for the accommodation industry increased by 15.2% year on year in August, data from Statistics SA (Stats SA) on Monday showed.
The survey is conducted monthly and covers a sample of public and private enterprises involved in the short-stay accommodation industry‚ with the results used to compile estimates of tourism satellite accounts as well as the gross domestic product.
Stats SA said that income from accommodation only‚ increased by 13.2% year on year in August‚ the result of a 3.6% increase in the number of stay unit nights sold and a 9.3% increase in the average income per stay unit night sold.
Stats SA describes a stay unit as a unit of accommodation available to be charged out to guests. Examples include a powered site in a caravan park or a hotel room.
The types of accommodation that recorded the highest year-on-year growth rates in income from accommodation in August 2013 were hotels (15.8%) and “other” accommodation (11.4%).
The main contributors to the 13.2% year-on-year increase in income from accommodation in August 2013 were hotels‚ which contributed 10 percentage points; and “other” accommodation‚ which contributed 3.2 percentage points.
Income from accommodation increased by 10.6% in the three months ended August 2013 compared with the three months ended August 2012.
The main contributors to this increase were hotels (10.8% and contributing 7.1 percentage points); and ‘other’ accommodation (13.1% and contributing 3.5 percentage points).
