SA tourism accommodation income up 10.3% y/y in July

Total income for SA tourist accommodation industry rose by 10.3% year on year in July‚ Statistics SA’s (Stats SA) tourist accommodation survey released on Wednesday showed.

Income from accommodation increased by 11.2% year on year in July 2013‚ the result of a 3.6% increase in the number of stay unit nights sold and a 7.4% increase in the average income per stay unit night sold.

The types of accommodation that recorded the highest year-on-year growth rates in income from accommodation in July 2013 were the “other” accommodation category (15.4%) and hotels (10.5%).

The main contributors to the 11.2% year-on-year increase in income from accommodation in July 2013 were hotels (contributing 6.8 percentage points) and “other” accommodation (contributing 4.1 percentage points).

Income from accommodation increased by 97% in the three months ended July 2013 compared with the three months ended July 2012.

The main contributors to this increase were: hotels (8.5% and contributing 5.7 percentage points); and “other” accommodation (14.7% and contributing 3.6 percentage points).
