Growthpoint Properties Limited on Wednesday walked away with two prestigious South African Property Owners Association (SAPOA) Innovative Excellence Awards for Green and Industrial Property Development.

The awards were announced at the 45th annual SAPOA International Property Convention & Exhibition at Sun City. The awards showcase outstanding property development.

Growthpoint’s redevelopment of Lakeside Office Park in Centurion won the overall green award. Its development of Ellerines high tech facility in Port Elizabeth won the industrial developments category.

Norbert Sasse, CEO of Growthpoint Properties Limited says: “We’re thrilled to receive two prestigious SAPOA awards in one year. It re-enforces Growthpoint’s commitment to investing in quality buildings and giving businesses the space to thrive. It is also a clear reflection of the hard work, dedication and passion - from our team and professional partners - which results in excellent property assets.”

The industrial award-winning Ellerines high-tech distribution facility, owned and developed by Growthpoint, is designed by Loudon Perry Anderson Architects. This is the second time that this winning team has clinched the industrial development award. In 2012 it won the category with Ellerines distribution facility in the Western Cape.

Growthpoint developed this distribution facility in Port Elizabeth to serve the greater Eastern Cape region, selecting a site in the growing Greenbushes industrial node, excellently served by the N2 highway. Reduced operating costs were a priority and Growthpoint achieved this with, among other things, dimmable fluorescent lighting with motion sensors, a heat pump for hot water reticulation, sun protection blinds on the glazed offices and external insulation for flat concrete roofs.

“We’re pleased to receive this meaningful award. By working with our clients to understand their businesses and their property needs, and using competent professionals, we can deliver cutting-edge facilities with competitive rentals, without compromising quality,” says Growthpoint Properties Industrial Division Director Engelbert Binedell.

The overall green award-winning Lakeside Office Park redevelopment, designed by AMA architects, is the first existing building in SA that has been redeveloped with the intention to obtain a GBCSA Four Star Green Star rating.

Directly opposite the Centurion Gautrain Station, the refurbished building intelligently reuses original building structures, transforming it into innovative A-grade office space that embodies the principles of environmental preservation and liveability to refresh and reaffirm the property.

The striking refurbishment gave new life to a tired building and creates a healthy, inspiring working environment with plentiful natural light, views, efficient floor plates, enhanced thermal efficiencies, as well as other quality features.

Growthpoint Properties Office Division Director Rudolf Pienaar says: “We’re delighted with this sought-after award. Growthpoint constantly strives to improve our portfolio of offices to create quality space which works best for our clients. Green building plays a key role in providing spaces in which businesses can thrive by creating a stimulating working environment and reducing building utility costs by using sustainable alternatives, to the benefit of occupants.”

Growthpoint Properties is the largest South African listed property company with property assets valued over R50 billion. It owns and manages 412 properties in South Africa, 44 properties in Australia through its investment in Growthpoint Properties Australia or GOZ, in which it has a 65% stake, and a 50% interest in the properties of the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town.
