Following the credit crisis and post the recession, global economics and capital flows are crucial to the South African real estate market.

“SA property is at a tipping point”, says IPD SA managing director, Stan Garrun, “we can either grow taking on all the dimensions of a globally relevant real estate market or we can continue to operate on the sidelines where the fittest succeed but our markets do not flourish”.

What are the strategies of the large institutional investors in developed markets? Will social conditions enable an open, safe and sustainable investment market in SA? What is the Government doing to enable this and where are the large funds like the PIC headed?.

Questions like these will be addressed at the 9th Annual Investment Property Databank (IPD) Property Investment Conference, being held in Cape Town next week.

Reckless talk about property rights and demands for changes to the SA Constitution in political circles needs to be effectively and quickly countered to scotch increasing jitters on the part of both businesses and investors in SA property.

So says journalist Max du Preez who is scheduled to deliver a hard hitting address at the Conference.

Themed Expanding Horizons, the Conference is presented by the Investment Property Databank (IPD), in partnership with the SA Property Owners’ Association and sponsored by Old Mutual Property.

As SA property looks to global investment horizons and aims to attract international investors, the idea of uncertain property rights will create jitters on the part of both businesses and investors.

IPD SA managing director, Stan Garrun says “pivotal for SA’s property market is whether social conditions will enable an open, safe and sustainable investment market in SA? These topics will be discussed frankly at the upcoming conference”.

Other speakers at the conference will include Andrew Brooking of Java Capital, Rob Wesselo of International Housing Solutions, John Loos of FNB Commercial, Arnoud Vlak of IPD Netherlands, Wayne van der Vent of PIC Real Estate Managers, Craig Hallowes of Pangbourne Property, Keillen Ndlovu of Stanlib, Rael Levitt of Auction Alliance; Marius Muller of Pareto, Peter Golding of The Property Foundation, Pam Golding Properties and Kecia Rust of FinMark Trust.

The 9th annual IPD Property Investment Conference will take place on 28 and 29 July 2011 at the Westin Grand Hotel in Cape Town, South Africa.
