Gazetting Infrastructure Bill approved by Cabinet

Collins Chabane, Minister in the Presidency for Performance Monitoring and Evaluation

Cabinet has approved the gazetting of the Infrastructure Development Bill for public comments.

Briefing reporters on Thursday following Cabinet’s last meeting for the year, Minister in the Presidency for Performance Monitoring, Evaluation and Administration, Collins Chabane, said Cabinet had “taken note of the bill”.
 
The bill seeks to provide for the continued existence of the Presidential Infrastructure Coordinating Commission and the designation and implementation of Strategic Integrated Projects, which are of significance economically or socially to the state or a region.
 
The bill also seeks to provide that public-private partnerships maybe used as a vehicle to bring about rapid infrastructure development where an organ of state, including a public entity, is unable to implement a project, among others.
 
In February, Economic Development Minister Ebrahim Patel said the bill would be tabled in Parliament in 2012.
 
At the time, Patel said that infrastructure development would be driven by public-private partnerships.
 
In his State of the Nation Address, President Jacob Zuma declared 2012 the year of infrastructure development.
